My Marvelous Journey to Writing Class

I am Yamin Shwe Sin who searches every single new word from everything I read: news, articles, books, subway advertisements and Instagram posts, but those vocabularies are rarely read again from the saved items. So, I have to search again and again in order to remember them. Every family member of mine is a believer, while I am atheist. I have never told them about that, and I think this situation clearly portrays one part of my personality which is I barely open my deep feelings or ideas to others. However, I have found a place to express those which is writing them down.

While I am learning English, among four skills which are reading, writing, listening and speaking I am pretty good at writing. But I could only write short paragraphs before I took English writing classes at the college. I went to the writing center for reviewing the paper before I turned it to the professors. I learnt about how to write clearly in expressing my ideas or arguments to the readers also including some basic grammar mistakes.

I noticed that the most difficult time for me in writing is the start of the paper because I have to spend a lot of time to figure out how to start and decide what I wanted to write about if the assignment allowed me to choose the subject freely. There is no doubt that I can write something really fast and clear by just answering some specific questions. However, the skill I crave for is how to write a good story what I meant is creative writing.

Therefore, I am glad that some of the assignments of this class have allowed us to write creatively and freely, even though it was painful for me to figure out at the start and less painful in the middle and happy in the end. I would not believe myself that I can write something by just observing a certain place and focusing on sensory details. This field observation assignment really helps me to try to write more. Even though I noticed that we had to add about sensory details in the paper, I lost points on those. So, I believe that will remind me all the time about how details are important in the writing, and I really enjoy writing that observation because it let you observe the place as the outsider at the same time while your body was still there, which was interesting.

Then, the next assignment is research proposal in which the challenge I had to face was to decide which field I wanted to dive into and avoid changing the topic in the middle if I could not articulate the ideas anymore. I had spent days and days to make that decision and finally I found the suitable topic that I am interested. Although the assignment is about creative writing, it requires us to think logically and stay focused within the topic and arguments we wanted to claim. Thus, I had to think carefully about the facts that I was going to write and consider them did they relate to my topic or support my thesis.

Even though I had a general idea of what I wanted to say, it is always becoming another thing when you were in a position of how to interpret those concepts in order to let the readers really understand your statements. So, I agin straggled at the literature review section which has to be written both logically and clearly and shown supporting details to your argument. In which, I thought how to present one fact after one fact for achieving a sense of flow when reading and avoid writing random facts which interrupt the readers’ experiences.

In the end, I accomplished the task of wring a seven-page research proposal and I am satisfied the outcome because I had the chance to think deeply of what I am interested and write them down in which its meaning is far more than the assignment. I believe this writing help me not to be afraid of writing the papers in the future because the consequence of being afraid is running way. So, at least I am not afraid of writing now, and the only thing I have to care about is how to write. This class let my writing to improve over time because I cannot imagine that I can manage these kind of writing at the first day of the class, and everything changes at the end of the semester; my views when face to the writings and my style of writing. Finally, I can say that I enjoyed the class because the sequence of assignments gave me the chance to write better after each of them, and although the process when I wrote was painful, I also enjoyed that pain.
